got Mick?

Chances are, you don't know me.

My name is Mick Ayres.  I am an eclectic performer who plays traditional music, shares tall tales
and performs skilled magic for audiences from around the world.  As a Disney entertainer
working under a character name, I perform several shows a day, six days a week...so attending
magic conventions to rub shoulders with other magicians is rare.  However, I believe that
bouncing ideas off other, like-minded performers is critical to the development of new material.
Obviously, I'm hoping this website will be a venue for that very purpose.

Like many of you, I developed a passion for sleight-of-hand early on.  But unlike many of you, I
was raised close to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.  So, as a teenager in the mid-70's, I was
already pitching magic effects to crowds at a now-defunct theme park and later for
Ripley's
Believe It or Not
magic shop.  After high-school, a four-year military tour in the U. S. Coast
Guard took me to south Florida where I moonlighted for
Paul Diamond at his famous shop in
Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

For the next decade, I performed for metalworking industry corporations at trade shows across
the United States, Canada and Mexico.  In September of 1989, I moved back to the South
Carolina lowcountry and sought performance opportunities closer to home.  For the next ten
years, I managed several tourism-based magic shops during the day and spent my evenings
working tables at upscale restaurants and nightclubs.  In those years, I developed a gospel-
themed sleight-of-hand show titled In
The Wink Of An Eye that was focused on youth
audiences and was presented in churches nationwide.

In the year 2000, after completing a successful month-long audition run at
Disney’s Animal
Kingdom
resort in Orlando, I was permanently contracted as the resident entertainer for the
exclusive
Disney Vacation Resort on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina.  Currently, my
'Evening of Magic' performance remains the only full-hour, one-man magic show Disney offers
on any of its worldwide properties...as it moves into it's fifth straight year.

I lecture frequently throughout the southeast United States.  Also, I have marketed many effects
and written several books and manuscripts about the art of magic.  In 2001, I was chosen as
South Carolina Magician of the Year.  In 2002, I was awarded a Presidential Citation after
founding two Rings of Fellowship for the International Brotherhood of Magicians.  In 2003, my
effect 'RhymeTime' won a
Linking Ring Award for Mentalism.

Internationally, my effects have been published in
MAGIC, The Linking Ring (One-Man
Parade),
Channel One and in Steve Beam's Semi-Automatic Card Tricks Vols. 4 & 5.

So there you have it.  That's who I am.  I offer these credentials not as an opportunity to boast
but rather, to let you know that, in my life, I need card material
that works.  I'm not interested in
the newest, slick card flourish.  Sure, those things have their place, but I want routines and
sleights I can use as tools in the real world.  Show me a guy who has a small arsenal of solid
utility sleights and I'll show you a man ready to make a living with a deck of cards.
